세간에 만연해 있는 인식 중에서 "영어가 곧 부와 권력의 조건"이라는 게 있다. 그러나 가만히 생각해보면, 이건 옳지 않다. 이명박 당선자나 이경숙 인수위원장을 보면 알 수 있는 일이다. 이들이 과연 영어를 잘하나? "당신을 환영합니다"를 "You're very welcome!"이라고 하는 당선자나, Orange를 "오레인지"라고 하는 인수위원장이나, 아무리 봐도 영어를 잘하는 것 같지 않다. 영어 잘하는 걸로 치면 이들보다 백배 천배 나은 이들이 한국에 수두룩하다. 그런데 이들은 대통령도 인수위원장도 하지 못한다.
결론은, 영어를 잘하면 부와 권력이 따라오는 게 아니라, 부와 권력이 있으면 영어를 못해도 잘하는 게 되는 거다. 영어를 잘하면, 영어를 못해도 괜찮은 부자나 권력자로부터 떡고물을 더 받아먹을 유리한 위치에 설 수 있을 뿐이다. 문제는 이런 줄세우기의 위계구조를 타파하는 거다. 따라서 국제화시대에 영어가 필요하다는 객관적 사실과, 영어를 잘해야 부와 권력을 쥔다는 주관적 믿음은 아무 상관이 없다.

이 사람들 정말로 이렇게 생각하고 있는게 분명합니다.
그런데 영어는 세계적으로 가지각색의 발음들이 있는데 이러다가 호주 영어 특강이라든이, 영국 영어 특강이라든지, 아니면 미국 남부 특강도 나오겠습니다.

The recent incident of Lone Star made me think again for what purpose Koreans learn (or teach) English. Steven Lee, the former head of Korean Lone Star’s office, is now on charge of tax evasion and embezzlement. He, according to the newspapers, is Harvard graduate Korean American. Without a doubt, he is fluent in English (actually native speaker of English). He must be one of the paragons that most Korean parents want their children to be. But as I read the articles about Lone Star and him in the newspapers, I could not help but ask a question what kind of person he was. He must have been a successful model in Korea and in the Korean community in the States (and his parents must have been proud of him), since he is a fluent English speaker, earned MBA from Harvard, and got a job at a major American fund company. However, look at what he has done and how much he damaged on Korean economy (and us) with his talent and educational background. Without his language ability and Harvard MBA, it is unlikely that he was in such a powerful position to control the situation and in turn, brought all the damages.
Evelyn said “ English becomes the gateway to money, status, knowledge and protection” (under the discussion of "Why learn English?"). It is so true. But we should envision beyond personal needs and interests. Education can sometimes serve for wrong need, desire, and interest. Then, there will be a dangerous marriage. It can raise a monster who disturbs a democratic society and destroys others’ happiness, as in the example of Steven Lee. I am sure that he reached his personal goal in his life (not any more, though) and worked hard for his company’s benefit, but against Korea’s benefit (his or his parents’ country). As watching all the Harvard law school graduate, fluent English speaking Korean lawyers who speak for Steven Lee and Lone Star, I blamed their parents for not teaching them to see beyond money and fame.
Helen Kim, the first president of Ewha Womans University, was also fluent English speaker. During the Korean War, she negotiated several political matters with the U.S. as a Korean representative. The American representatives, persuaded by her eloquence, agreed upon Korea’s requests (I don’t know what that was). One of the American representatives later said, “Who the hell taught her English?”
Ah, the same tool can be used in such different ways and for such different purposes!
